HCM scanned positive 24th March 2009

Firefantasy Big Daddio, or Johnny, was intended to be a breeding cat but his first heart scan on the 23rd September 2008 showed heart measurements within the range for HCM. He was scanned again on March 24th 2009 under sedation for total accuracy. There was no doubt that he has HCM, with a marked deterioration in his heart over the last few months. Johnny has been neutered of course. We will have him scanned again this summer to see how the disease is progressing.

John is on medication to help his heart, taken every 8 hours. It was only once the medication took effect that we realised how sleepy and quiet Johnny had become. Thankfully he is now as active and playful as any other cat. I believe neutered boys make the best pets and he is incredibly loving and showers us with affection and cuddles. We encourage him to be physically active and to enjoy life to the full. Our goal is for Johnny to have as pleasurable a life as possible rather than perhaps a long but dull life being kept quiet and calm! We have stopped showing him though.

Johnny is very easy going, anything for a quiet life, but once he starts playing, watch out! He loves batting things across the floor and household objects are always more fun for him than actual cat toys. He gets on well with our other cats, but does enjoy spending time with other Sphynx best of all. He has adventurous taste buds and loves to pinch a scrap of strongly flavoured crisps to chase across the floor happily before finally devouring it.

The bottom right picture of John is a recent one, from February 2010.
